Abstract
Conversion disorder is defined as a mental disorder whose symptoms or deficits, affecting voluntary motor or sensory function, cannot be explained by a neurological or general medical condition. The etiology of this disorder is still not very well understood and interpretations fluctuate in a unique matter over time. In this article we review present knowledge from clinical and epidemiological studies focusing both on the neurological aspects and neurobiological findings in the so-called "neuro-psychosomatics" of this dissociative phenomenology. Until now there is no fundamental evidence that a non-psychogenic approach could help to explain conversion disorders in a lasting persuasive way.
