Abstract
Simple guide values are indicated for the relation between the subjective perceived volume (loudness) of running speech and such objectively measurable sound parameters as sound level and bandwidth. The loudness of running speech is halved when the level is reduced by about 7 dB or when low pass filtering with a cut off frequency of roughly 700 Hz or high pass filtering with a cut off frequency of about 1,000 Hz is provided. Running speech, distorted by peak clipping and undistorted speech of equal maximal sound level are perceived as being nearly equally loud. Speech simulating noise and running speech produce the same loudness whenever the noise level corresponds to the maximum value of the strongly time dependent level of speech.
