Abstract
At the moment, there are no laws in Germany for rating vibrations in particular of railways. One reason may be that a solid scientific background for the determination of limits is lacking. In this situation, according to DIN 4150 part 2, the maximum of the vibration strength within a time window (Taktmaximal) is proposed. In the present study, this proposal was challenged. In particular it was assessed, whether only the value KBFmax can describe the subjective ratings, or if other magnitudes like e.g. KBeq are even better predictors. Another problem discussed is the just noticeable increment in perceived vibration, in particular in regions where vibrations are already perceived by the public. It was found that an increase in energy of about 25% is just noticeable, and can be interpreted as a JND. For the experiments described in this paper, a special vibration lab was planned and realized, in which subjects can compare physically well defined vibration stimuli. The experiments are limited to vibrations typical for railways including the related airborne noise.
