Abstract
Geodesy has undergone a dramatic change during the last decades. It is mainly caused by the development of the measuring and computing technologies. New types of observations and efficient computers are available permitting measurements and analyses which were unthinkable a generation ago. The objectives of geodesy have been expanded through this change. The classical problems of geodesy as the science of measuring the Earth surface have been broadened to comprise the detection of effects of global change andgeodynamics. The International Association of Geodesy (IAG) followed the development by establishing the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) in 2003. As an association project it will integrate all geometric and gravimetric observations for combined parameter estimation. The objective is a consistent description of global deformation and mass transport processes in the system Earth.
