Abstract

The electrochemical behavior of passive metal electrodes can be demonstrated by the electronic properties of the passive layer. Under certain conditions passive titanium electrodes show semiconducting properties. This is described investigating the charge distribution in the passive layer, the mechanism of electron transfer reactions including doped passive layers, and photoelectrochemical reactions. The behavior is summarized in a bandstructure model which explains the reactions investigated.
