Abstract

Livestock farming is challenged by environmental legislation, animal welfare legislation, food vs. feed competition and fundamental critics from NGOs. In order to make livestock farming in Germany sustainable, fundamental changes are required. However, livestock will have an important role for sustainable farming also in the future. In order to achieve this, food vs. feed competition must be considerably reduced and environmental impacts must be reduced, also by reducing the number of animals. This will require considerable efforts in research, but also reliable financial support for farmers investing in better husbandry systems.
