Abstract

In the surgical replantation of traumatically amputated peripheral portions of the limbs, conditions for undisturbed wound healing do not appear to be very favourable, in view of the presence of open fractures, tendon and nerve injuries, ischemia, and prolonged duration of operations. Wound healing was observed in 109 of the authors' patients representing 150 replantations of portions of the limbs in the preceding year. The patients were treated prophylactically with a combination of ampicillin and oxacillin. In view of the type of case presented, the number of wound infections was small.
