Abstract
The increasing individualization of products results in a rise of variants, which are produced in small lot sizes and, at the same time, have to be offered at competitive prices. The aforementioned development is accompanied by a high increase of the complexity in the Organization, planning and control of production processes. An increase of the autonomy in the level of operation entails a high flexibility and robustness against perturbations in manufacturing and assembly processes. In this context, knowledge-based systems present a promising approach to diagnose unfore seen events in production processes and to derive feasible actions for troubleshooting. The article outlines a holistic approach for a knowledge- based failure management. With the help of a rule-based system, the target and actual values of specific product characteristics are evaluated and feasible actions are derived, which are automatically integrated in the current production process.
