Abstract

. The increasing individualization of products results in a rise of variants, which are produced in small lot sizes and, at the same time, have to be offered at competitive prices.

plexity in the organization, planning and control of production processes. An increase of the autonomy in the level of operation entails a high flexibility and robustness against perturbations in manufacturing and assembly processes. In this context, knowledge-based systems present a promising approach to diagnose unfore seen events in production processes and to derive feasible actions for troubleshooting. The article outlines a holistic approach for a knowledge-based failure management. With the help of a rule-based system, the target and actual values of specific product characteristics are evaluated and feasible actions are derived, which are automatically integrated in the current production process.
