Wind effects on periodic optimal flight of motor gliders with retractable engine

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Effects of constant horizontal winds on the maximum-range performance of a motor glider with a retractable engine are dealt with. The flight type yielding the maximum range, known as saw-Tooth mode, is of periodic nature because there are alternating phases with the engine extended and retracted. Solutions of the periodic optimal control problem are obtained using realistic mathematical models for describing the motion of the vehicle and the procedure of extending and retracting the engine. Furthermore, an efficient optimization method was applied. Results are presented which show how head-And tailwinds affect the range performance achievable with the saw-Tooth mode as well as the optimal behaviour of control and state variables.
