Abstract
Cities offer habitat for man and wildlife and can add to the conservation of animal species and nature experience for humans. Residential housing companies contribute significantly to the planning of urban green spaces in cities. For this study, 155 residential housing companies were asked about their attitudes towards wildlife on their properties. In their view, residential amenity green spaces should primarily enhance the living quality for inhabitants, be secure and clean, and create healthy living spaces. Attractive animals (butterflies, song birds) were noted as desirable, others (pigeon, fox) were considered less desirable. Importantly, the companies reported only minor problems with wildlife, both during planning/construction and in maintenance of residential estates. Overall the companies have a positive attitude to taking wildlife-promoting measures if the living quality for their customers and the image of the company can be improved thereby. The results of the survey show that there is general willingness among housing companies to promote wildlife in urban residential areas. The study further outlines ways in which measures to promote wild animals can be aligned with the corporate philosophy of housing companies.
