Abstract
Recent controversy over the possible health risks from exposure to silicone gel-filled breast implants has sparked intensive scrutiny. In previous studies, inflammatory reaction adjacent to silicone gel-filled breast implants has been observed. Despite the suggestion by previous investigators of a relationship between the possible reaction of the immune system and silicone implants, up to now no study has proved a connection between silicone gel-filled breast implants and the development of rheumatoid disease. Resulting from this controversy, a variety of alternative filling substances were investigated. Although they have the advantage of being biodegradable in case of implant rupture and breast cancer diagnosis is improved by better radiolucency, they also induce capsule contracture, the main risk of breast augmentation. Long-term studies will be needed to check these implants.
