Abstract

Mixing a discrete number of α-particle configurations shows that the intrinsic structure of the second 0+ state in 12C is well described by three α-particle almost in a straight line. The absence of a rotational band based on this strongly deformed structure is explained by the instability of higher I-states against break-up into 8Be + α.
