Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most abundant functional bowel disorders. The main symptoms are abdominal pain, stool irregularities and flatulence. There are also extraintestinal complains like headache, depression and anxiety. Irritable bowel syndrome can be caused by visceral hypersensitivity, disturbances in motility and secretion, a modified bacterial flora and alterations occurring after an infection. Dysfunctions of the enteric nervous system play a key role in the pathogenesis, and new therapeutic approaches aim to normalize the serotonergic signal transduction. Furthermore the pharmacological intervention of other transmitters and neuromodulators might be a promising therapeutic approach. Some probiotic bacteria can improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome indicating that the manipulation of the intestinal flora is beneficial.
