Abstract
In a photoexcited electron-hole plasma in GaAs, we test a key concept of many-body physics: the formation of dressed quasiparticles. A novel spectroscopic technique based on ultrabroadband THz electro-optics allows us to resolve the mid-infrared polarization response of the system with sub-cycle resolution of the electric field amplitude and phase. In this way, we directly observe the transient buildup of Coulomb screening on a femtosecond time scale.
