Abstract
Introduction: Living kidney donation has become an established treatment for end-stage renal disease. Using a prospective longitudinal study design, predictive psychosocial factors in recipients for health status and psychological well-being after transplantation were examined. Methods: All 205 psychological assessments performed at UKM until October 2008 were analyzed using a specifically designed guideline and documentation form. In addition, post-transplantation data from 90 recipients were available on anxiety and depression (HADS-D [12]), health-related quality of life (SF-36 [2]), and life-satisfaction (LZI [17]). Results: Predictive factors for health-related quality of life in recipients after transplantation were, amongst others, age, gender and the degree of anxiety. Conclusion: Better knowledge about the degree of anxiety and other factors prior to transplantation is necessary to improve the preoperative preparation of living kidney donation recipients and to avoid postoperative crises.
