Abstract

The completion of the Main-Danube canal in 1992 represents the realization of a centuries old plan to connect the river systems of the Rhine and the Danube. However the natural waterways which form part of this connection must also be accessible to modern shipping. The 70 km long stretch of the Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen is a narrow bottle-neck which needs to be widened. Plans to widen this stretch of the river have been strenuously opposed by environmental groups headed by the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern (BNB, Bavarian Nature Protection League). The paper examines an alternative proposal for making this stretch of the river more accessible to shipping (the flussbauliche Alternative). This proposal is compared with the plan put forward by the Rhine-Main-Donau AG but is found to be no more favourable from an ecological point of view.
