Abstract
An appropriate strategy for the application of models for marker assisted breeding value estimation for big cattle populations is the so called 'two step approach'. Since the pedigree used for marker assisted breeding value estimation is only a small subset of the overall population, applying the two step approach will usually cause a loss of information. In order to limit this loss of information and to ensure possible benefits for the selection, it is necessary to transfer as much information as possible from the evaluation model for the complete population into the reduced model. Investigations about the impact of the size of the pedigree and the extent of genotyping showed that the pedigree should ideally
