Abstract
Even in visceral (abdominal / gastroenterological) medicine it is mandatory to value today the future development in order to be able to keep an influence on it. Visceral surgery and gastroenterology have to be considered together because of their growing interaction. Admittedly, any prognosis of the future is always insecure, since completely unexpected events may turn down any evolutionary projections, but really disruptive changes are infrequent. The trend towards trauma reduction will remain to be the main feature of the oncoming 15 years. The domain shift from classical surgery and interventional gastroenterology to less invasive disciplines will continue. Notwithstanding, there is a chance even for the well established interventional disciplines of today to maintain or even to expand their fields of activity if they are capable to benefit of new, innovative technology to improve the therapeutic efficiency.
