Abstract
For the design of powerhouse caverns It Is necessary to use prior information from other projects and a theory to estimate the rock mass parameters, especially in the early studies. First, the distribution functions of several joint parameters are discussed. The density function of Young's modulus E is derived from the function of the deformabll1ty following a normal distribution. Rock mass classification systems can be used to estimate the shear strength parameters of rock mass. A correlation between simple input parameters for classification systems, which can be easily determined, and the Young's modulus E is presented. With the use of such parameters It 1s possible to estimate the coefficient of variation of deformabllity and the representative volume of an in-situ deformabll1ty test. As can be seen the variation and the reauired rock mass volume for taste 4c cmaller fnr woskor rnrk massess.
