Abstract

Mountainbiking has grown rapidly in recent years, but unfortunately there is still a lack of detailed information about the injury patterns of mountainbike related injuries and overuse syndromes. Between january and november 1996 a total of 208 mountain-bikers (32 women, 176 men) with an average age of 28.4 years - amateurs and professionals - has been interviewed by a standardised questionnaire concerning acute injuries and overuse syndromes as well as anthropometric, technical and protective details. Statistical analysis was performed by describing and inference statistic methods. The results recommand choosing a comfortable sitting-position, wearing a helmet, using protective gears and being well trained to reduce the injury risk.
