Abstract

Reforms in pre-service teacher education in Germany include the re-organization and qualitative improvement of practical internships. However, educational research lacks knowledge about systematic interrelations between mentoring and the perception of teacher candidates' professional competencies. The present study investigates the change of teacher candidates' perceived professional competencies during a practical internship. For that reason N = 221 teacher candidates were asked to fill in a standardized questionnaire in a pre- and post-test. Findings show systematic relations between mentoring at university and the improvement in the self-perceived professional competencies. Especially the perceived mentoring in the educational courses predicts changes in the self-assessed competencies of teacher candidates.
