Abstract

The variational principle is used to calculate K-shell ionisation by slow heavy-particle impact. The variational wavefunction for the electron contains a variable Bohr radius and a variable radial velocity. From their equations of motion the energy transferred to the electron is calculated and related to the ionisation probability. At low impact energies the results are in quantitative agreement with experiment.
