Abstract

Urticaria and angioedema - in it's chronic form - are one of the most common and excrutiating skin conditions which, in spite of great progress in experimental dermatology and allergology, still represent a major problem for both physicians and patients. Management requires a consequent stepwise procedure according to the intensity of the disease, which can be classified according to a three-step-scheme. In between the steps, as well as after completing the diagnostic work-up, systemic therapy with histamine H1 antagonists over at least four weeks is recommended. In the evaluation of the patient beside allergy tests and laboratory and clinical (interdisciplinary) examinations, special emphasis has to be given to the history including psychosomatic aspects. It is important that patients know about the reversibility of their skin disease.
