Abstract
The GERDA experiment searches for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge. In Phase I it has achieved an unprecedented background index of 10-2 cts/(kev·kg·yr) at the Q value of the decay that allowed to set a new lower limit for the half-life of this lepton number violating process of 2.1·1025 yr (90% C.L.). This paper gives an overview of the present upgrade for Phase II where both background index and sensitivity shall be improved by about another order of magnitude.
