Abstract
200 male patients without symptoms of urethritis were examined for Chlamydia trachomatis infections. Urethral swabs were taken and tested for C. trachomatis antigen by direct immuno-fluorescent test (DIFT) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); in addition, specific IgA and IgG antibodies to C. trachomatis were determined by immunoperoxidase assay. Antigen results were positive in asymptomatic chlamydial infection in 13 men (6%) by DIFT and in 6 men (3%) by ELISA. Serum specific IgC antibodies were detected in 25 men (12%) and IgA antibodies in 11 men (6%). Furthermore all persons were questioned on their sexual behaviour: age at first sexual intercourse and use of preservatives. Of the 154 persons questioned the average age at first sexual intercourse was 17.5 years; 40 (26%) of the tested persons use preservatives regularly.
