Abstract
This paper is a continuation of a previous study of the boriding of steel by ion bombardment with diborane. The distribution of carbon and silicon in manganese-silicon steels is investigated. A reaction-kinetic and thermodynamic analysis makes it possible to explain the experimentally determined element distributions perpendicular to the substrate surface and the composition and morphology of the layers produced. The dominant effect of silicon is shown. A distribution analysis of manganese and chromium begun earlier is continued, in order to simultaneously characterize the solubility of the elements in the boride Fe//2B and their distribution in the transition boundary layer.
