Abstract
The first part of this paper addresses current tendencies in university governance, contrasting trends towards externally funded applied research, interdisciplinary cooperation, and increasingly specific research profiles against the principle of unity and freedom from utilitarian purpose on which Humboldt's ideal university is based. The second part discusses the legitimation problems that the debate over utilitarianism has created in the humanities?-Ponce regarded as the official representatives of the classical educational ideal. The third and final part takes a new look at the relationships between unity and plurality and between theory and practice in sport science, and discusses deficits in these areas from the perspective of science theory against the backdrop of the changing conditions in which universities today operate.
