Abstract
Aircraft equipped with an electric propulsion system feature unique range performance properties. Range performance topics dealt with include basic properties in terms of maxi-mum-range cruise in zero wind cruise as well as the effects of head- and tailwinds. It is shown that range performance properties of electric aircraft differ considerably from those of comparable vehicles with an air-breathing propulsion system. It turns out that electric aircraft can show significant performance advantages. Analytical solutions of the range per-formance problems are derived so that results of generally valid nature are obtained. This is supplemented by computational results used as exemplary cases in order to provide a quan-titative insight.
