Abstract

For the development of conceptual understanding in the natural sciences dealing with pictures is essential. Picture comprehension, in the sense of a qualified handling of pictures and pictorial symbolic systems, also defined as pictorial literacy, needs to be fostered. Therefore, a training programme had been developed, which is structured along the complexity dimensions of the German educational standards for the natural sciences reproduction, reorganization and transfer, which is meant to foster pictorial literacy in a systematic manner. To test the suitability of the chosen sequencing a control group was implemented, in which students are using pictures in a non-sequenced manner. To test the effectivity of the interventions with regard to learning success in pictorial literacy a test instrument was developed, which measures the skills in this domain. It is structured in a similar way as the described training programme and therefore, allows for gaining insights into the suitability of the sequencing. Results indicate that besides the learning gain in pictorial literacy in two of the three complexity dimensions there are significant interaction effects. This indicates that the design of the intervention has an influence on the learning outcome. Linear regression analysis indicates that the sequencing along the complexity dimensions can be an adequate tool to foster skills in pictorial literacy.
