Abstract

Nephrologic ultrasound offers a variety of diagnostic possibilities that are continuously being increased by new technical features. In the clinical routine the most commonly used procedures are the evaluation of the kidneys using B-mode ultrasound, measurement of kidney size and perfusion analysis of the renal cortex with Doppler methods. Diffuse diseases of the kidney parenchyma show a broad overlap of ultrasonographic signs. Helpful parameters for estimating the severity of several kidney diseases are kidney size, echogenicity of the renal parenchyma and renal resistance indices. Contrast media ultrasound has so far been successfully used for analysing microperfusion in renal masses and also for the classification of kidney cysts. Nephrolithiasis and urolithiasis can be detected using colour Doppler ultrasound in an unconventional way. Future developments for nephrologic ultrasound are expected in the field of contrast media ultrasound research, in sono-elastography and in three-dimensional ultrasound.
