Abstract

Automotive transmissions for passenger cars in Europe have changed continuously in the last 20 years. The ratio range for transmissions has increased more and more. The trend to more gears for automatic transmissions and manual gear boxes is going on. The ever changing cars and engines require new transmissions. The general trend in Europe is that the number of different concepts has increased. Though in the past were only manual gearboxes and automatic transmissions on the market, in the future we expect semi-automated manual gearboxes, CVTs and hybrid systems as well. In the moment there is no clear tendency for passenger car gear boxes to be seen. A lot of design parameters can be judged and weighted differently, so that many different concepts are parallel on the market. It depends on the main focus which concept is the best for a special application. The main influence parameters for the gearbox design are the size and the weight of cars and the torque and power of ic-engines. The trend for these parameters will be shown. Some possible concepts will be shown and discussed. A forecast for the future will be made.
