Abstract
We compared postoperative morbidity and mortality in two groups of patients with advanced coronary artery disease who underwent bypass surgery. One group was selected for revascularization based on clinical presentation and angiographic data; in the other group, selection criteria included assessment of myocardial tissue viability by positron emission tomography as well as clinical and angiographic data. Postoperative outcome was better in the second group, suggesting that tissue viability studies may be useful in selecting patients for bypass surgery.
