Abstract

Although animal welfare standards and preventive animal health measures in German animal production were obviously improved over the last decades, there are still numerous examples for painful procedures or unjustified killings that needed to be addressed in the future. Beside this two most ethical relevant fields of action in regard to animal welfare, education and supervision of animal farmers as well as hygiene needed to be improved and antibiotic treatments should be minimized. For implementation of all measures applies that they are all meshed with each other and cannot be addressed solely. Generally, more transparency, practical-oriented research, rapid transfer of scientific results and critical thinking would help to discuss possible alternatives for painful procedures or unjustified killings and further optimize animal welfare.
