Abstract

The absorption of labelled tramazoline eye drops was tested experimentally. Up to 50% of the substance instilled was incorporated within one hour; 50% of this amount could be demonstrated in the ocular tissues, and 6% was demonstrable in the blood after 60 minutes. Peak concentrations could be demonstrated in the cornea (75%) and conjunctiva (17%); deeper ocular areas showed much lower levels (aqueous fluid, 4.7%; vitreous body and lens, 0.5%). The study was carried out in rabbits with derived lacrimal ducts, so that the data obtained in this experiment represent maximal values for tramazoline absorption.
