Abstract

The authors review the existing literature on the temperature field due to a moving heat source/sink on the surface of a roll. Either questionable results or solutions requiring extremely extensive numerical calculations can be found. The application of the solution for the temperature field of a moving heat source as an analytical and programmable expression, taken from the wear and friction literature, allows to estimate the temperature field near the surface of a roll. Also simplified expressions for the stress field near the surface are presented.
