Abstract
Under the influence of surface tension thin cylinders can disintegrate into rows of spheres. This process can be interpreted using Lord Rayleigh's perturbation theory. In this paper the spheroidization of plates is investigated. Considering thin finite and semifinite plates two models for the disintegration are proposed. The results of the model calculations are successfully compared with measurements on lamellar and spheroidized pearlitic microstructures.
