Abstract

Construction and operation of the heavy ion postaccelerator at the Munich tandem accelerator, its rf system, its buncher and its magnetic energy analysing system are described. The booster is a linear rf accelerator of the IH-type. The total accelerating voltage is about 5 MV for 50 kW rf power input. The resonance frequency is between 60 and 80 MHz. Systematic analyses of the shunt impedance and the frequency of this accelerating structure in relation to the particle velocity and the gap width are made. Calculations for the beam dynamics are presented. In the first operation of the booster, 241Am α particles were accelerated from 4.1 to 14.9 MeV, a 32S tandem beam from 100 to 160 MeV and a 58Ni beam from 130 to 230 MeV.
