Abstract

Living hornet colonies were relocated to the laboratory to study the nest thermodynamics. A quantitative description of the functionality of the nest could be derived. The obtained data lead to a better understanding of the insects' construction strategy to survive on a minimum amount of energy. With the necessary abstraction, the findings can inspire innovations in building technologies.
