The digital transformation: humanities and entrepreneurship

Abstract

The chapter addresses the position of German universities within the digital transformation of the labor market and knowledge transfer ecosystems. By taking the humanities as an instructive example, it focuses on the difference between innovation- and entrepreneurship-prone disciplines like the digital humanities and the overarching theoretical structure of other disciplines. Transkribus, an AI-based platform for handwritten text recognition, exemplifies both structural limitations and possible solutions for sustained entrepreneurial activities by German humanities. While knowledge exchange serves to include even peripheral disciplines into the Quintuple Helix Model of Innovation, it can be reciprocal, yet also ambivalent in that entrepreneurial endeavors may also sever the ties between academia and industry.
