The capacity of fiber-optic communication systems

Abstract

We present a capacity estimate of fiber-optic communication systems limited by fiber nonlinearity. The analysis reveals that a capacity of ∼5 bits/s/Hz in a single polarization for transmission over 2000 km is possible using advanced technologies.
