Abstract

A wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) testbed with full compensation of chromatic dispersion between Berlin and Darmstadt was realized for research and testing purposes. The interaction of unconventional data rates of customer specific applications with standardized data rates of WDM-transmission over long distances was also tested. The WDM-testbed was used to test applications and to check the compatibility of electrical equipment such as ATM-switches, IP routers and equipment of the access network with the optical WDM-equipment. It was found that by conducting such experiments the costs for long haul transmission links with high data rates could be reduced and various solutions of system architechture could also be formulated.
