Abstract

Single, short test tone impulses are masked by continuous as well as gated uniform masking noise. In a systematic investigation, the dependence of the masked threshold on the delay time between masker and test impulse, test tone duration, test frequency, masker level and masker duration is determined for simultaneous, forward and backward masking. The most important result is an atlas of temporal masking effects, produced by a single broad band masker impulse. By means of these data, thresholds of test tone impulses, masked by broad band noise of various temporal structures can be estimated.
