Abstract
Regional development is challenged by the internationalization process of the economy. The question remains whether regions are capable to respond in adequate ways or get washed away by the global tide of deterritorialized flows of production and capital. In order to assess the region's room to manoeuvre it is necessary to break with misconceptions about regional development. The paper describes six "myths of regional development" and therefore tries to give some hints for proactive policy responses in face of a changing environment.
