Abstract

The transformation of an urban district to sustainable and liveable environment is a long-term planning task which requires the consideration of complex multidisciplinary interdependencies. The research project Nuremberg Weststadt at TUM has as a goal such a trasformation. It applies a novel method of systems modelling for this purpose as presented in this paper. It pays special attention to the integration of quantitative and qualitative aspects that need consideration not only to achieve a linear optimization process of single aspects but also a comprehensive systems approach for sustainable development. Sustainable urban development in this respect needs to integrate not only quantitative measurements of energy efficiency or resource management but also qualitative aspects of liveability. Simple examples illustrate the method and the implementation of these aspects in a system model.
