Abstract

The current working environment is changing towards more digital and automated processes. Particularly due to the developments associated with Industry 4.0, employees in production and logistics need new competencies to master the tasks and challenges of the future. Companies must have a clear vision of the processes of the future and determine the new competencies required. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to develop a systematic method for competency determination that enables companies to identify the gap between current competency profiles and the competencies required for future logistics jobs. This method enables a consistent and transparent identification of competency requirements, since the impact on competencies can be directly derived in the event of process changes using a competency identification scheme. The resulting scheme assists companies in making personnel decisions based on systematically identified competency profiles for logistics. The method is designed for human resources (HR) and logistics departments of manufacturing companies to determine competencies for both operational and administrative logistics. Extensive interdisciplinary workshops and semi-structured interviews with HR experts at a commercial vehicle manufacturer were conducted to design and validate the method. The work contributes a method for systematic competency determination to human resource management (HRM) research that can quickly capture changes in the dynamic environment of Industry 4.0.
