Abstract

Sustainability and the associated environmental protection is one main issue in present time. The question of sustainability is also interesting in civil engineering. So far the most research projects focused on sustainability of building structures. However infrastructure projects, especially tunnel construction, are not considered. Many public databases are available to get ecological parameters like CO2E-emissions for construction materials and processes. Concrete is one of the most important materials for tunnel construction. The CO2E-emissions of concrete are just given for a few different concrete strength classes in the considered databases GEMIS and Ökobau.dat. Exemplary mix designs are made for different concrete and cement strength classes to calculate the CO2E-emissions and to evaluate the influence for the overall CO2E-emissions of tunnel construction. The CO2E-emissions will be evaluated monetarily to compare them with production costs and therewith life cycle costs. Indirect effects resulting from traffic situations and related indirect costs have to be taken into account.
