Abstract

In this work, an approach capable to perform simultaneous material selection and optimal sizing of geometric variables will be presented. The performance of the algorithm is ascertained with regard to convergence behavior, computational efficiency and ease of implementation for constraints such as stress and buckling restrictions. Moreover, the algorithm is applied to engineering examples: a carbon-fiber handle bar, a compound extruded section and an aircraft fuselage section. The approach shows good convergence performance for all cases.
