Abstract

The results achieved hitherto with whole-body irradiation in case of acute leukemia are examined with respect to the optimization criteria of a radiotherapy. The most important failure-risk is the recurrence which occurs in more than 50% of all cases, then follows intestinal pneumonia. The authors think that an increase of the total dose, the adaption of the dose distribution to the distribution of leukemia cells in the body, and a higher fractionation of the total dose, are approaches for improving therapy results.
