Abstract
The polaron functional integral is equivalent to the statistical mechanics of an anharmonic string. We show that the effective stiffness of the string coincides with the effective mass of the polaron at zero temperature. Using this observation we prove an upper bound on the effective mass which is exact for weak, 0, and for strong, coupling and determine the optical absorption spectrum for.
